Product Description: Planting Tips and Care Instructions
LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! As real estate agents often say, it's all about the location - and the same goes for planting your new plants. Knowing the size, shape, and behavior of your plant is crucial for choosing the perfect spot in your yard. Keep in mind that the young plant you're planting now will mature into a larger specimen in 3, 5, or 10 years. When marking the spot for your plant, there are two key measurements to consider. First, determine the expected width of the branches of the mature plant and cut it in half. Then use a tape measure to mark out a circle around your spot, ensuring the branches won't encroach on your house, fence, or other plants. Secondly, make sure there's enough room to clean or mow around your tree, and that the mature roots won't damage sidewalks or foundations. Careful planning and measurement now can save you from expensive repairs in the future.
ROOTING IN: The first year after planting is critical for the success of your plants. You'll want the roots to stretch out and establish themselves in their new home. Water is essential during this period, but be careful not to overdo it. A 30-second count with a garden hose each day for the first 30 days, then every 3 days thereafter, is a good rule of thumb. However, this may vary depending on the weather in your area. Checking that the soil is moist 2 inches deep will tell you if the water is sufficient. Mulching is a great way to maintain soil moisture, prevent weed overgrowth, and add nutrients. Remove any grass around the base of the tree and add your preferred mulch, keeping it about two inches thick and away from the stem/trunk.
Adding a time release fertilizer will promote growth above and below ground. This Java Red Weigela comes established in a 1-gallon pot and can reach a mature size of 4ft tall and 5ft wide. It prefers full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight) and is hardy in zones 4-8. It also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Please note that plants ship dormant in the winter months, and the images shown are of mature plants.
